The MGA arrived in 1955 and changed what an MG looked like. Gone were the upright fenders and slab sides of the T-series, replaced by a long, low body that still turns heads seventy years on. This 1958 example wears Red over a Red interior and rides on wire wheels, the combination most people picture when they think of the car.
It shows 49,300 miles and it runs well. In 2025 it had more than $4,500 in mechanical and cosmetic work, including a valve job with a machined cylinder head, fresh tires and tubes, new carpet in the trunk and rear area, new door vent windows, and a new 12V battery. The engine bay wears an honest working patina while the paint and brightwork carry a good shine.
This is a driver's MGA, sorted and ready to enjoy, with a factory handbook and a parts catalog to go with it.
Exterior
The Red paint holds a strong shine across the long hood and rounded rear haunches. Chrome bumpers front and rear, twin round headlights, and the classic vertical-bar MG grille with its octagon badge set the face. Bullet-style side mirrors sit on the front fenders, and the folding windshield stands ahead of an open cockpit.
The car rolls on chrome wire wheels with knock-off hubs, one of the details that makes an MGA look right. A body character line runs the length of each flank, picked out by a thin pinstripe. Look closely and you will find the honest marks of a driven car, but from a few feet away it presents beautifully.
Interior
The cabin is finished in Red, from the padded dash top to the door panels and seats. A wood-rimmed steering wheel with a polished three-spoke center and an MG horn badge sits ahead of the driver. The instrument layout is pure period MGA: a large speedometer and matching tachometer, plus fuel, water temperature, and other gauges, with toggle switches and pull knobs spread across the painted dash. An MG badge plate trims the passenger side.
Fresh carpet was fitted in the trunk and rear area, and new door vent windows went in as part of the recent work. The seats and door panels show some wear consistent with the mileage.
Engine
Under the hood sits the 1489cc B-series four, fed by a pair of SU carburetors, the setup that gave the 1500 its eager, free-revving character. The engine wears a maroon rocker cover with the MG maker's plate and Weslake patent tag still in place. In May 2025 the top end was freshened with a valve job and the cylinder head machined roughly 5 mils, and a new 12V battery was fitted at the same time. Power runs back through a four-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels.
The engine bay shows its years honestly. Surface corrosion and patina sit on the radiator, hardware, and fittings, the wire-mesh air cleaners and braced fuel lines all present and accounted for. It looks like what it is: a car that gets driven and enjoyed rather than parked for show.
Recent Work
The past year brought more than $4,500 in refresh work. The valve job and machined cylinder head were done in May 2025. New tires and tubes followed in September 2025. Additional work included new trunk and rear interior carpet, new door vent windows, and a new 12V battery. The car also comes with a Moss Motors MGA parts catalog and an MGA 1600 Mk.2 Driver's Handbook.
