By 1964 Austin-Healey had spent eleven years making the big Healey civilized, and the Mk III BJ8 is where it arrived. It has a wood-veneer dash, wind-up windows and a hood that folds properly, and its 2,912 cc six makes 148 bhp on twin SU HD8 carburetors, the most any road-going Healey ever made. The overdrive matters more than the horsepower. It drops the revs at speed, which is the difference between a car you take across a state and one you take around a town.
This 1965 example is British Racing Green over black, on chrome wire wheels, showing 36,235 miles. The L in its HBJ8L31036 chassis number marks it as left-hand drive from new, so it is an American-delivery car that never had to be converted.
Exterior
British Racing Green on a big Healey is the combination the model is remembered in, and it does something for the shape that lighter colors do not: it holds the long curve from the nose over the front wheel and lets the chrome do the punctuating. The wire wheels are the correct chrome ones with knock-off hubs, which are worth having.
Interior
The cabin is trimmed in black, with a wood-rimmed wheel ahead of the Mk III's veneered dash. That dash is the quickest way to tell this car from the Healeys before it, and it marks the change that made the model livable: a proper fascia, wind-up glass in the doors, and a hood you can raise alone when the weather turns. A new tonneau cover came with the recent work.
Engine
The 2,912 cc C-series six is a long-stroke, cast-iron engine that makes its best work low down, and 148 bhp in a car of this weight gives it the shove the model is known for. Twin SU HD8 carburetors feed it. Power runs through a four-speed manual with overdrive to a live rear axle. Front discs handle the stopping, and the front suspension is independent on coil springs.
Recent Mechanical Work
Two jobs worth knowing about, because they are the two that spoil a big Healey when they are neglected. The front brake caliper and pads have been replaced, and the rear axle bearings and seals have been renewed on both sides. Failed axle seals put oil onto the rear brakes, so having both ends sorted at once means the braking system is in known condition rather than inherited.
