The 1965 Mustang needs no long introduction. It set the template for the American pony car and still turns heads six decades later. This one is a convertible in Silver Smoke Gray, a color Ford offered on the 1964 1/2 and 1965 cars, over a black power top and a black interior, sitting on 14x7 styled steel wheels wearing redline radials. It has been through a fully documented rotisserie restoration, and that documentation comes with the sale.
The car left the factory as an A-code with the four-barrel 289, and the engine has since been rebuilt from the block up, bored .030 over and balanced, with a Cobra dress kit and Hi-Po air cleaner finishing the top end. A rebuilt C4 automatic sends power to the rear wheels. The odometer shows approximately 93,000 miles.
Exterior
Silver Smoke Gray over a black top, a color Ford offered for 1965 only, mostly silver with just enough green in it to change character in direct sun. The car has been through a full rotisserie restoration, with the stainless rocker moldings, hood leading edge trim and inner door rockers all addressed along the way, and the side glass is original Carlite with a new tinted windshield up front. Underneath it sits on 14x7 styled steel wheels with center caps and 205/70/14 Toyo redlines.
Interior
The black interior was restored perfectly. The horizontal instrument cluster runs across the dash with the three-spoke wheel and pony badge in front of it, and the original gauges were retained rather than replaced with aftermarket units. A Custom Autosound Concours Series USA-630 II radio is fitted, keeping the factory appearance while adding modern audio capability.
Drivetrain
This Mustang left the factory as an A-code car with the four-barrel 289, and the engine has since been fully rebuilt from the block up, bored .030 over and balanced with fresh valve work on the C5 heads. An Edelbrock Performer carburetor handles fueling, with a Cobra dress kit and Hi-Po air cleaner finishing the top end and an aluminized dual exhaust with an H-pipe out back. A rebuilt C4 automatic and a 3.00:1 rear axle keep the gearing relaxed on the highway, and a Borgeson power steering unit and front disc brakes bring the driving experience closer to modern.
Model History and Performace Pedigree
The 1965 convertible is where the Mustang story starts, and it's the car that turned a brand-new model into a phenomenon almost overnight. Ford handed the same platform to Carroll Shelby that year, and the GT350 that came out of it gave the Mustang the performance credibility it's traded on ever since. Having been perfectly restored, this one presents the way these cars did when they were new.
Items included with Sale
